Matches between humans are where the strategy comes into the game, as a human player will be able to adapt and get around any defenses that are constructed (howitzers work wonders for destroying bases). Look at Age of Empires II: All that's really needed to beat an AI is to build castles as fast as possible, and then the AI won't know how to get past them.
